Ассоциация VESA анонсировала стандарт DisplayPort 1.4a

VESA Association on

Tuesday announced a new standard DisplayPort 1.4a. Among its key features listed the ability to transmit a video signal to a much higher resolution.

DisplayPort 1.4a will be able to take full advantage of modern graphics processors, and advanced display technologies. That would cover a wider range of devices, including laptops and candy bars. For example, the new standard will support resolutions up to 8K or 7680 x 4320 pixels, the higher the data rate with an increase in color depth and refresh rate.

However DisplayPort 1.4a is designed exclusively for embedded displays. Therefore, to obtain such an impressive resolution on the external screen is not yet possible. Of course, such opportunities of the new standard will require a corresponding increase in processing power, but VESA sure this is partly compensated by the support Segmented Panel Display, which will reduce the cost of production of panels, power consumption and thickness.

Currently 8K resolution support a few devices, not to mention the appropriate content. Thus, DisplayPort 1.4a - it is rather a foundation for the near future, than a real need for computer manufacturers. In VESA yet modest about the prospects of the new standard, saying its broad introduction in 2016.

As for Apple, is an American company and all can go the other way, giving up extra connectors. Recent rumors about the 12-inch MacBook Air is largely confirm such a scenario using USB Type-C. Moreover, the highest resolution among all Apple products at the moment has an iMac display Retina 5K, which is unlikely to be replaced by something more technologically advanced in the next couple of years.
